Universal DC input solutions for rail applications

How one power supply can do it all for rail

Overview:

• A single solution simplifies integration across different rail platforms.

• It’s an ideal approach for system developments that demand low-risk solutions with a fast time to market.

• Universal DC power supply that meets stringent sector performance standards.

Meet the universal DC-DC power solution that satisfies every standard for demanding rail applications. It’s the holy grail for rail – an approved DC-DC power solution that covers all nominal traction voltages (24VDC – 110VDC) and complies with the latest electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and fire protection standards.

One solution

With one power supply solution, there’s no need to provide variants of electronic transportation equipment. It’s simple to integrate systems across every common platform in rail applications with this single solution.

In rail, there are unique demands for electronics on traction vehicles, rolling stock and equipment, which must withstand harsh climatic, mechanical and electrical environments. Our expert rail team has decades of experience designing specialist power supplies for the rail industry. Here’s a run-down of the exacting standards they meet.

Ultimate safety and reliability in DC-DC power conversion

There are two main standards that define the input supply requirements for electronic equipment in rail applications EN50155:2017 and EN50121-2-1:2016.

EN50155:2017 covers brown-out and transient requirements of nominal DC input supplies, as well as resilience to interruptions, surges, ESD and transient bursts. It sets out performance standards in a range of environmental conditions - temperature, humidity and shock and vibration.

With just one compact device, it’s possible to covers all standard traction nominal battery voltages. XP Power’s RDF series of 25 and 50W rail DC-DC converters deliver at a continuous input voltage range of 16-160VDC, or 14VDC in transient operation.

Fire protection compliance is designed-in

XP Power’s units are compliant with EN45445-2 fire protection requirements: they’re designed to operate in ambient temperatures from -40 to 100degC.

The RDF25 model comes in an industry-standard 2”x1” PCB mount package. Choose an additional factory fitted heatsink to extend the temperature range for full power.

The RDF50 uses a standard ¼ brick baseplate-cooled package. This allows the full 50W of output power to be drawn at baseplate temperature to 100degC across the entire range of traction nominal battery supplies.

Proven EMC Compliance

By adding minimal external components, the units comply with the latest EMC standards. Independent certified test laboratories have authored reports that ensure easy integration into the end application, whatever the environmental or mechanical requirements of the final mounting location.

Low risk and fast to market

With these standard, off-the-shelf modules, you can integrate them directly into the end equipment. Use them as building blocks to provide complete centralized power solutions across all of the common traction power platforms.

XP Power’s solutions are trusted and installed around the world on rolling stock and trackside equipment. You’ll find them in lighting, information, entertainment, safety and engine management systems as well as in signalling, crossing control, in-cabin radio and displays.
