Supplying an AC/DC Power Supply from a DC source

Posted on 11 lug 2017
A frequently asked question concerns the suitability of using an AC/DC power supply with a DC source. There are two parts to the answer, one concerning the ability of the converter to run without issue and the other concerning the safety aspects.

DEF-STD 59-411 and the challenge of Land Class A

Posted on 15 giu 2017
DEF STD 59-411 was issued by the UK Ministry of Defence in 2007 for land, sea and air equipment.  It replaced DEF STD 59-41 and other EMC related Defence Standards. DEF-STD 59-411 is organised into 5 sections and the tables below show how it differs from the previous standard

New Version of EN61000-3-2, The Harmonic Current Standard

Posted on 05 giu 2017
EN61000-3-2:2006+A2:2009 is the present standard for limits for harmonic current emissions for equipment with an input current less than, or equal to 16A per phase but will be withdrawn and replaced by EN61000-3-2:2014 on 30th June, 2017.

Designing for reliability in high voltage applications

Posted on 28 mag 2017
High voltage design and manufacturing comes with an additional set of disciplines that must be applied in order to produce products with excellent long term reliability, often in harsh environments. As high voltage power supplies become increasingly compact and miniaturized, mastering these disciplines is essential to ensure long term and trouble-free operation in the field. Failure to properly apply these design and manufacturing principles can result in real-world MTBF well below design expectations. In school, we were taught that materials were either conductors or insulators. Air was said to be an insulator. However, lightning proves that air is not always an insulator. Welcome to the world of high voltage!

Industry leading 95% efficient 225 Watt AC-DC supply in a 2" x 4" package

Posted on 11 mag 2017
The EPL225 series of high efficiency, open frame, AC-DC power supplies are approved for industrial, IT and medical applications. The series comprises seven single-output models that offer a range of standard output voltages from +12 VDC to +48 VDC. A secondary 12 VDC / 0.5 A fan output is provided across the range.

The New Safety Standard for ITE and AV Equipment: IEC62368-1

Posted on 10 apr 2017

Background of IEC62368-1

The boundaries between information technology and audio/ video technology have become increasingly blurred. For example, “when is a 15” TFT device a TV and when is it a PC monitor?” or “is a smartphone a telephone, a PC or is it a MP3 player”.   Application of safety standards such as IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1 has led to certain devices being tested twice and sometimes there are conflicting requirements between the two product standards.  There is therefore a need for a single safety standard to replace the two existing IEC 60065 (Audio and Video) and IEC 60950-1 (Information and Communication Technology) product safety standards.

DEF-STAN 61-5 Issue 6 Part 6 Compliance Made Easy

Posted on 21 feb 2017

In February 2009, the UK Ministry of Defence published issue 6 of Defence Standard 61-5 part 6 to cover 12 and 24V systems. This issue 6 version has a major change when compared to issue 5 which had been originally published in 1990. The main difference is to define how electrical equipment survives when subjected to the DIT08.B load dump. Load dump occurs when a heavily loaded electrical system exhibits a loose battery terminal, which can be caused by the shock of the military vehicle traversing over rough terrain and the resulting voltage transient presented onto the electrical system by the poor connection defined in the commercial vehicle standard ISO 7637-2.

EN55032 Replaces EN55022

Posted on 02 feb 2017
EN55032 is the new standard for EMC emissions replacing EN55022, the standard for ITE equipment, and two other EMC standards; EN55013 & EN55103 related to broadcast, audio, video & entertainment systems. The Date Of Withdrawal (DOW) for EN55022 is March 5th 2017.

3, 6 & 15 Watt medical DC/DC converters offer 2 x MOPP and patient leakage to 2 µA

Posted on 24 gen 2017

The JHL & JHM series of encapsulated, isolated and regulated DC-DC converters for medical applications. Available with single and dual outputs, the 3 Watt JHL03, the 6 Watt JHL06 and the 15 Watt JHM15, are all packaged in industry-standard format cases. Their size is model dependant, ranging from an industry standard DIP-24 for the JHL03 and JHL06 through to 40.6 x 25.4 x 10.2 mm for the JHM15 series.
